UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Michael Keating, arrived in Garowe on Saturday for a meeting with Puntland President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas.
President Gaas led a delegation of Ministers that included the Minister of Interior, Minister of Education, Minister of Justice and Religious Affairs, as well as officials from the regional government. After their closed-door meeting, President Gaas said that the two discussed a wide range of topics.
“It is a great honour today that United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, Michael Keating is visiting us here (in Puntland), it is not the first time he comes to us, he has visited us here often. Whenever he comes to us, we are talking about important issues in Puntland and Somalia. We talked about the peace process in Somalia today and discussed the obstacles surrounding of peace and security in the country. We discussed ongoing political issues as well as how we can move forward with Somalia.”
He added that he was impressed with Keating’s work in Somalia.
For his part, Keating thanked President Gaas for meeting with him and praised the progress that Puntland has made.
Keating told media that the pair discussed regional security and the democratization process.
